four women suspected of witchcraft being tortured, stripped, tied up and burned

Horrifying footage has emerged showing four women suspected of witchcraft being tortured, stripped, tied up and burned by an angry mob in Papua New Guinea.
The women were accused of sorcery after a young man fell ill in a village in Enga province in August.
Social media posts said the women were accused of “invisibly” taking the man’s heart, and then putting it back after they were tortured. In their attackers’ eyes this would also prove their guilt as sorcerers.

In the footage, the women are being prodded and threatened with machetes while being questioned by a group of men.
According to the translation the women deny having done anything, and plead with their attackers.

The woman begs: "My son, stop it!” says one woman, laying on the ground.
“Talk out, where did you put it?” comes the reply. “Burn her with the wire.”
“I’ve got nothing to do with it,” says another woman. “I am a mother with five children.”
But the attackers ignore their pleas, with one saying: "Don't just hit her, burn her."
It is thought at least one woman died after the ordeal but there was no confirmation of that.

The video was initially shared on social media by students, who, according to one source, did it to show they approved of the torturers' actions.

The Guardian was told by two PNG sources the women were accused of sorcery after a young man fell ill in a village in Enga province in August.
Social media posts said the women were accused of “invisibly” taking the man’s heart, and then putting it back after they were tortured. In their attackers’ eyes this would also prove their guilt as sorcerers.
“There’s no real way they can prove themselves innocent,” one PNG source who has been involved in rescues of victims of sorcery-related violence, told Guardian Australia. “Once they’re suspected they’re basically done for, they’ll be tortured and maybe killed as well.”

It’s not police photos or anything of the crime being shared,” said the source involved in rescues of victims.
“It’s actual participants who are there and actually bragging about what they’re doing. It’s kind of like a Abu Ghraib video or something.”
He said he was aware of many people sharing the video on their smartphones, including high school students, and said it wasn’t out of horror but rather approval for the actions being taken against the four accused women.

“There’s no logic going on in the matter … To try to talk logically, even to students, doesn’t really get you very far. They say, we have evidence and you ask what kind of evidence and they say it’s invisible evidence you can’t see it,” he said.
“It’s hard to argue against that.”
"The PNG Government has approved a National Action Plan against Sorcery Accusation Violence. Now it must be implemented effectively and as soon as possible by everyone concerned including police, the legal system, health, education, NGOs, community leaders and the churches."
The incident is just one of numerous acts of violence or death related to accusations of sorcery. Anger is increasing among Papua New Guineans as the attackers go unpunished.

Gown take on Biafra

eanwhile, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has dismissed any potential threat to Nigeria’s unity as a result of the activities of some pro-Biafra group.

General Gowon, who noted that Nigerians have put behind them the ugly memories of the 1967 civil war, pointed out that those behind the protests were youths who have no idea what the war cost Nigerians.

The elder statesman was speaking in Lafia, the Nasarwa State capital shortly after a malaria eradication campaign visit to Governor Tanko Al-Makura.

He expressed confidence that the campaign was being driven by just a few people and that majority of the Igbo people do not share the view.

While admitting that they protesters had the right to express their feelings he stated “with Biafra it is finished”.

Election timetable don show out for Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission has released the final timetable for the 2015 local government elections in the state.

The timetable contains the schedule of electoral activities for LGA elections which span October 2015 through February 2016.

Chairman of the commission, Chief Blessing Izagara, unveiled the new timetable during a stakeholders’ forum in Yenagoa,  Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday.

Izagara said the new timetable was the authentic one as the previous one published in some sections of the media did not pass through the necessary approval of the commission.

He also said the new timetable had been thoroughly vetted, corrected and approved by BYSIEC.

Izagara also explained that the timetable had taken into consideration the litigations that might occur after the elections as well as the handover date of the current government.

He said, “We call this meeting to carry everybody along on the issue of change in date of elections earlier published.

“It is important that we take cognisance of election litigations before the handover and that is what we have done.”

He further said between February 10 and April 17, 2016, was sufficient to conclude election litigation.

During the meeting, the state Chairman of Accord Party, Mr. A.O. Victor, pleaded with the commission to ensure that the new timetable was not changed again.

He also urged the commission to ensure a level playing field for all political parties in the forthcoming local government elections.

Responding to Victor’s plea, Izagara promised free, fair and better election.

He, however, advised all political parties to ensure that their agents were well behaved during the elections.

The chairman said, “While government has promised to provide security and enabling environment to guarantee credible election, the political parties should prepare their agents well for the elections, because some agents are involved in anti-party activities including selling out the party they claim to represent.”

In his remarks, BYSIEC  Commissioner for Publicity, Mr. Tari Bolou, advised the political parties to conduct transparent primaries.

He also urged the parties to invite the commission to observe their primaries because it is part of the statutory functions of the state electoral umpire to monitor activities of political parties, especially primary election.

Three road transport organisations on Thursday in Abuja issued the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum within which it should commence the rehabilitation of major roads in the country or face an indefinite strike.

They are National Association of Road Transport Owners; Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union and National Union of Road Transport Workers.

The stakeholders warned that all types of commercial vehicles, tankers, trucks, trailers, lorries and commuters would withdraw their services to drive home their demands if the demand was not heeded.

Specifically, the associations listed the Mokwa-Jebba-Bode-Sa’adu Road and Eleme-Obigbo Road, as some of the roads the government must commence immediate rehabilitation or face an indefinite strike.

National President of NARTO, Dr. Kassim Bataiya; National Chairman of PTD, Salmon Oladiti; and National President of NURTW, Dr. Najim Yasin, made their position known in a joint press conference addressed at NARTO secretariat, Abuja.

They listed other roads in deplorable condition as Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja-Katsina Ala and the Calabar-Ikot Ekpene-Aba roads.

Others are Aba-Umuahia, Onitsha-Enugu, 9 Mile-Otukpa, Owerri-Port Harcourt, and the Enugu-Port Harcourt road in the South-East.

For the North-West zone are Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos, Funtua-Birnin Gwari, Kano-Gwarzo-Daya, Yawuri-Kontagora and some parts of Kano-Katsina road.

In the North-Central are Jebba-Bode-Sa’adu-Ilorin, Kontagora-pizzi(makera), Okene-Lokoja- Abaji.

In the South-West zone are Apapa-Tincan-Oshodi road; Lagos-Sango Otta-Abeokuta road; Shagamu-Ajebandele- Ore road and the Ikorodu-Sagamu road.

In the the North-East are Gombe-Biu-Gombe-Mubi road, Potiskum-Bajoja-Gombe, Maiduguri-Gamborin Gala, Ngorore-Mayabalwa Jada-ganye, Numan-Jalingo-Wukari-Katsina Ala road, and the Nguru-Gashua-Garin-Alkali roads.

Speaking on behalf of the unions, Bataiya said the need for government’s prompt intervention became necessary as a result of frequent loss of lives and property, vehicle breakdown and crashes on the roads on daily basis.

He said, “NARTO, PTD and NURTW have therefore resolved that if by 14 days from the date of this press briefing, government neglects or refuses to commence rehabilitation of the Mokwa-Jebba-Bode-Sa’adu Road and the Eleme- Obigbo Road in particular, we would be left with no option than to withdraw our services of all types of commercial vehicles, tank trucks, trailers and lorries.

“If at the end of our ultimatum, the government does not react to our demands, you should wait until after 14 days, then you will see what we are going to do.”

The police have arrested three additional suspects allegedly involved in the multiple blasts in Nyanya and Kuje, two satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory, that claimed about 20 lives on October 2,2015.

The suspects were paraded on Thursday at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad Headquarters in Abuja, where several bomb-making materials recovered from them were also displayed.

The police had earlier announced the arrest of Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu, but the force paraded five suspects including Mohammed Jimoh, Abdulwaheed Nasiru and Abdullahi Nasiru who were apprehended at various locations in Abuja.

A police source said the suspects, who were between the ages of 26 and 34, were picked up in three locations, adding that a special task force investigating the bombings traced the masterminds to Karamajiji village along Airport Road, Abuja.

“On further investigation after the arrest of the first suspect in Karamajiji, other suspects were picked up in Iddo village, also along Airport Road and Gaulaka area in Suleja, Niger State,” the source said.

He also said the suspects have confessed to being part of a terrorist group with intention of carrying out bombings around Abuja.

He added that the bomb-making materials were recovered from two of the houses used by the terrorists, while other accomplices mentioned by the suspects are still at large.

The suspects were later arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja on five counts bordering on ‎terrorism, conspiracy, accessory to acts of terrorism and act preparatory to an act of terrorism.

Meanwhile, a Joint Taskforce  comprising the personnel of the police, Department of State Services, the military and  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have arrested about 30 suspects during a raid at a black spot in Nyanya.

lol.. i neva collect bribe b4 - Amaechi..

The man get mind o.. lol.. how e go look us, then tell us to our faces as dem dey screen am say e neva collect bribe b4.. lol... this na story for obakiri gods..

Former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, appeared before the senate for screening as a ministerial nominee,  condemning acts of corruption and revealed that had never taken bribe in his life either as a private person or public official.

Amaechi who was asked to define corruption said, “Corruption is very difficult to define. If you are a public officer and you don’t take bribe, I’ve never taken bribe in my life but if they send a girl to you and you sleep with the girl and do her favour, you are corrupt.”

According to him, “Corruption is a very wide concept. If people are contesting for a position and you offer your son, brother or sister an opportunity to hold that position, probably the person is not qualified, you are corrupt. So, it is difficult for me to define corruption.”

Nineteen beneficiaries of the Rivers State Overseas Scholarship Scheme have returned from the United Kingdom without completing their programmes.

The students returned to Nigeria to avoid deportation after the expiration of the deadline for the payment of their school fees and allowances for accommodation.

Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency said in a statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday that the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had released some funds to offset the amount owed by the students.

It further disclosed that the funds did not reach the students before the expiration of the deadline for the payment of their tuition fees.

The statement by the Manager, Media and Communications of the RSSDA, Mr. Kingsley Uranta,  stated that the registration of the 19 students from the universities of Huddersfield (11), Bighton (three) and Nottingham Trent (five), had been deferred to 2016.

“The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, recently released some funds to pay tuition fees and upkeep and accommodation allowances for some of our students and their universities.

“However, for the UK in particular, the deadline for the payment of some schools fees elapsed before the fees could get to them. As a result, the registration of 19 students for 2015/16 in the universities of Huddersfield (11), Brighton (three) and Nottingham Trent (five) have been deferred to 2016,” the RSSDA said in the statement.

The agency pointed out that the affected students, who were on their way from the United Kingdom as of the time of issuing the statement, had to return to Nigeria in order to avoid being deported.

The RSSDA explained that it had confirmed from the aforementioned universities that the students could return to the institutions next year.

“Sadly, the 19 students, who have now left the United Kingdom to avoid infringing their immigration status and be deported, are expected to arrive in Nigeria today Thursday, October 22, 2015.

“We have confirmed from the universities that the students have the opportunity to return to school next year. We shall update you on any further development on the issue,” the statement read.
